Louise Hughes, director of student development, at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville has been named Outstanding Staff Member.Hughes has been at UACCB since February 2005. She works directly with placement testing, arranging accommodations for students with disabilities, and provides other student services. Hughes attained her bachelor of science degree in botany from Arkansas State University as well as her master of science degree in vocational education from the University of Kentucky.
When asked what she enjoys most about working at UACCB Hughes said, "I enjoy helping the students, and knowing that I am making a difference in their lives."During the nomination process for the Outstanding Staff Member award the UACCB staff senate nominates qualified candidates, and then votes to narrow down the potential winners. The employees nominated then post their resumes along with reference letters in the Row Johns library.
Hughes said, "Although there are several aspects to my position, I think my recent recognition comes from the work I do with the nearly 200 dislocated workers that are enrolled here. They depend on me to write their degree plans and to help them stay on track with their programs. It is always rewarding to have any student come to see me to excitedly say, 'I did it! I passed the test!' To watch their self-confidence grow is great. Student success is very important to me. Many students are scared to be here and my job is not just about paperwork. Encouraging and listening to students is so important."
